The Three Golden Buddhist Practices Saved Me From Danger-Personal Sharing from New Zealand Dharma Function 2017 (1)
Good evening Respectable distinguished guests and Buddhist friends.
First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the 10 directions. Gratitude to selfless Master Lu. Gratitude to respectable monks and nuns.
My name is Pei Li Jun, I’m very thankful to have learnt Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. I have benefited greatly from my 2 years of practising Buddhism. I have also learnt not to take things too hard. Most importantly, whenever there was a problem with my health, I could avert the impending danger through the 3 golden practices: making vows, performing recitations and life liberations. Today, I would like to share my personal experience.
On the morning of July 24, I had an attack of acute stomachache. It was so excruciatingly painful that I rolled on the floor. Thinking that it was gastric pain, I took some medicine but it didn’t work. My daughter immediately made an appointment with the family doctor. The initial diagnosis indicated inflammation of the gall bladder. The doctor suggested that I be admitted to Auckland Hospital. On the way, I recited the holy name of GuanYin Bodhisattva. The pain subsided slightly and moreover. I did not have to wait long to see the surgeon. I had to undergo a series of examinations to determine the cause of the pain. I am thankful that I have learnt to recite the Great Compassion Matra, it really helped to relieve my anxiety and stress in critical conditions. I was admitted and unexpectedly my daughter was allowed to stay with me.
The next day, I was told to fast in preparation for the medical test. My liver was diagnosed to have exceeded the index, especially ‘Transaminase’ which exceed 500. The test result showed that I had a gall stone but it was irregular in shape. It had to be examined again by an expert. During the 3 days of waiting, my daughter and I recited the Great Compassion Mantra non-stop. The 4th day afternoon, the specialist finally came. He told me that the bile duct was narrow and he suspected it to be malignant. Surgery was not recommended for fear that cancer cells might spread. We were told to be prepared for the worst. Seeing my daughter weeping, I had to calm myself to console her. I decided to seek GuanYin Bodhisattva’s help to overcome this calamity through the 3 golden practices: making vows, performing recitation and life liberations.
I remained firm in my faith. Besides reciting the Great Compassion Mantra. I repented of my ignorance. Though I have been a Buddhist for years, I only knew how to ask for blessings from Bodhisattvas. After practicing Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, then only I began to perform recitations and came to understand many Buddhist teachings. But I was still impatient, I didn’t perform my recitation seriously, I treated it like performing a duty and I failed to perform spiritual cultivation and rectify my weaknesses. I committed plenty of Karma of killing as I owned a restaurant before. Now I had to face the retribution at the age of 63.
I made a vow before GuanYin Bodhisattva that I would release fish and recite a specific number of Little House to eliminate my bad karma. Then came the miracle after making the vows. On the 7th day, the blood test showed some improvement without any medication. The reading for Transaminase dropped from 500 to 200. The doctor was amazed, so he suggested that I go for a biopsy and X-Ray of liver and gall. But I had to wait. We all know that we have to wait in line for medical tests in a public hospital. Unexpectedly, an arrangement was made for me to undergo the biopsy the next day. Everything went well. But that night, the incision began to bleed profusely. My daughter called for help and the doctors rushed in and they seemed to panic too. An experienced nurse instructed my daughter to press the incision with her hands. My daughter said she could feel heat running through her body, especially her hands, which she had never experienced before. After 10 minutes, my daughter told me that I would be alright. I could feel the blessing of the Bodhisattva. True enough, the bleeding stopped, thanks to Bodhisattva. I must mention that my daughter is a registered nurse with 10 years of experience and this was the first time that she had felt the warmth in her hands. That night, she dreamt about Guan Yin Bodhisattva for the first time.
I was discharged and told to wait for the test result at home. Waiting for a diagnosis is always an agonising experience for any patient. Luckily for me, I am firm in my faith. I recited the Great Compassion Matra incessantly to ease my worries. Thanks to GuanYin Bodhisattva, we got to see the doctor the 2nd day after returning home. Tge doctor said that he ruled out 90% possibility of a malignant mutation but I must have my gall bladder removed. Fortunately, there was a shift in the position of the stone and I was able to undergo an operation but I had to wait for 4 to 6 months.
My daughter and I made good use of whatever time we had to make vows, perform life liberation and recitations. We need Master Lu’s books ‘ Buddhism in Plain Terms’ and repent whatever wrong doings I had committed in the past. It’s worth mentioning that I have always been particular with food. I used to like meat dishes though I had been a Buddhist for years. The illness and pain that I suffered made me realise that all sentient beings are equal and that we must not satisfy our desire for gourmet delights at the expense of the suffering of animals. Thus, I made up my mind to become a vegetarian. Then, miracle happened. Three weeks later, I received a call from the hospital, that a surgery had been arranged for me by a top liver specialist. As we all know, no one is allowed to choose the doctors in public hospitals.
Thanks to the Bodhisattva, the surgery on August 28 went smoothly. The month-long nerve wrecking experience was like taking a ride in a roller coaster. First, I was plunged into an agony when told that I was suspected of having a tumor. But, eventually I only had to undergo a minor surgery to have my gall bladder removed.
I was able to join the ranks of volunteers in participating in the charitable activities organised by Guan Yin Citta Practice Centre, be immersed in the warmth of the big family and share it with friends who have not practised Buddhism, helping them to have faith in Buddhism and awaken spiritually.
This illness has intensified my belief that Bodhisattva do exist! We are able to feel their compassion especially when we are helpless and in agony. Though I suffered physically, deep in my heart, I am very grateful that this illness is like a process of spiritual cleansing, enabling me to have an in- depth realisation of life and the Buddha’s teachings. I am also grateful that GuanYin Citta Dharma Door has helped develop my wisdom, enabling me to cherish everyone around me and every affinity. I am thankfully to all Buddhist friends who have helped me.
Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Gratitude to Master Lu who has endured hardship to save suffering humanity. Thank you everyone!
