Interview with Master Jun Hong Lu
President of the Australian Chinese Buddhist Research Centre
During several previous interviews in Sydney, the well-known Australian Chinese leader Mr De Bao Xiang mentioned a number of times about Master Jun Hong Lu, the President of the Australian Chinese Buddhist Association and the President of 2OR Australia Oriental Radio. Mr Xiang said that Master Jun Hong Lu dedicates himself to teaching Chinese Chan Buddhism and has become the master of many people for their minds and souls, helping them to overcome difficulties and conflicts in life. In a recent interview with Master Jun Hong Lu, the reporter learned that the world of Master Jun Hong Lu is filled with the Buddha’s Light, and is truly without borders.
Master Jun Hong Lu was born in Shanghai, China, into a family of scholars and artists who have deep connections with Confucism and Buddhism. Since a young age, he has developed a strong interest in the deep and profound Chinese Chan Buddhism. He diligently studied Buddhism, including the Buddhist collection produced by Mr Zhao Puchu, former President of the Chinese Buddhist Association. Over the years, Master Jun Hong Lu received valuable teachings and instructions from many great Buddhist teachers and venerable masters which helped him to attain the true essence of Chinese Chan Buddhism.
Master Jun Hong Lu immigrated to Australia in the 1980s and has since started his legendary life. In 1998, he began his radio-broadcasting career in a Chinese radio station in Sydney as a radio program host. He has authentic Mandarin pronunciation, a clear and bright voice, and always has an enthusiastic and humorous presentation style. Master Jun Hong Lu has positive interactions with the listeners, and has gained an increasing number of supporters over time. Not long after, he became the President of the Chinese radio station. In 2007, Master Jun Hong Lu established 2OR Australia Oriental Radio, holding the roles of the President and Director. For the past 14 years, he has been teaching Chinese Chan Buddhism and traditional Chinese culture to over 100,000 local and overseas listeners through radio and videos. Master Jun Hong Lu is the founder of the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door.
The essence of Guan Yin Citta is mercy and compassion. To have mercy for others even if they are not connected to you, and to have compassion for others as if you are a single entity. The main purpose of practising Guan Yin Citta is to help people to improve the way they think, so they do not escalate conflicts. The radio program that Master Jun Hong Lu hosts, ‘The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics’, is extremely popular amongst Chinese listeners around the world. Listeners are from different age groups and backgrounds, including academics and scholars with doctorate and masters degrees, engineers, workers from all sectors, and students of all levels.
‘The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics’ is an all-encompassing radio program. Master Jun Hong Lu explains Buddhism in plan terms to teach people the Proper Faith in Buddhism, and to help people to understand Buddhist concepts and cultivate their minds. Through his unique method of teaching metaphysics concepts, Master Jun Hong Lu propagates Chinese Chan culture and Guan Yin Citta. He has published many books including ‘Buddhism in Plain Terms’, and ‘Heaven, the Spirit Realms and Us’ to promote Buddhist teachings. All books are for free distribution. He firmly believes that learning Buddhism is about learning the virtues of the Buddha. We live our life by incorporating the ethics, concepts, and essence of Buddhism. We practise Buddhism to cultivate our minds. We feel restless if our minds are not calm. Once we have purified our minds, we are able to concentrate and recognise our pathway to Buddhahood. We obtain the understanding of causality, birth and rebirth within the six realms, and the karmic conditions in our lives. Master Jun Hong Lu provides guidance to followers through the wisdom of Buddhism, and encourages them to perform good deeds including performing recitations and practising vegetarianism. Numerous people have experienced various effects from practising Guan Yin Citta. Many people have recovered from illnesses, found happiness, and changed their lives. Followers have found confidence and have become benevolent in helping others. When we are calm and have an open mind, we will think of others and realise that to give is more rewarding than to receive.
In 2006, the 7th Living Buddha Tulku Drupkang, the Vice President of The CPPCC Tibetan Committee, and the other six Living Buddhas visited Australia to promote Tibetan Buddhism. They gave Dharma Talks throughout Australia. Master Jun Hong Lu accompanied them over the entire course of the tour and had benefited profoundly from it: He received initiation, blessing and guidance from the Living Buddhas. As a result, Master Jun Hong Lu was able to deepen his understanding of the profound Chinese Chan Buddhism.
Confuciusm, Buddhism and Taoism are very important in Chinese traditional culture, which has a long history of over 5000 years. Schools of Confuciusm have been established in many countries and the concepts of Confuciusm have been accepted worldwide. In contrast, Chinese Chan Buddhism with over 1800 years of history has not been widely recognised. During the Tang Dynasty, Venerable Jianzhen travelled long distances to propagate Buddhism to Japan. It has since become a legend passed down by many generations in China and Japan, and has strengthened the friendship between the two countries. In recent decades, only a few venerable masters have travelled overseas to promote Chinese Chan Buddhism. To the rest of the world, Chinese Chan Buddhism is still considered to be behind the veil. Master Jun Hong Lu dedicates his efforts in the cultural exchange between Australia and China. In 2011, he began his world tour to promote Chinese Chan Buddhism and Guan Yin Citta. Since then, Master Jun Hong Lu has been invited by followers from many countries and regions to hold grand Dharma Functions, ‘The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics‘. The world tour included the UK, US, France, Germany, Denmark, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Master Jun Hong Lu now has over 3 million followers around the world, and his website has over 30,000 visitors per day. The numbers are increasing all the time.
During the interview, Master Jun Hong Lu revealed that he will be travelling to Hong Kong at the end of April this year to gather with around 7000 Buddhist followers and 50 venerable masters from all over the world. Master Jun Hong Lu will be giving Buddhist teachings to help people, encouraging them to advance in their lives. It was reported that the 5,000 seats for the function at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre (KITEC) have already been fully booked. To accommodate the demands of those who were not able to secure a seat, projects have been implemented to expand the capacity by broadcasting the event on air in extra venues. However, this can only increase another 2,500 seats for the event, and the demand surpasses the supply by far.
To conclude the interview, Master Jun Hong Lu mentioned that propagating Buddhist teachings is not just the responsibility of venerable masters. As a lay Buddhist who has studied Buddhism for many years, he believes that it is his duty to propagate Buddhist teachings. Master Jun Hong Lu is determined to continue to put in his best efforts to propagate Chinese Chan culture and Guan Yin Citta. (People’s Daily, Canberra, 2nd April 2012.)
