The following case is extracted from “International Buddhist Conference with Master Lu” Grand Dharma Function in Malaysia on 28 August 2011. Master Lu performed Totem Enquiries live on stage and answered questions from the audience to help them overcome difficulties in their health, career, and everyday issues.

When a person is asking Master Lu to perform Totem Enquiry, if a living person is being enquired, then the year of birth and the Chinese zodiac sign of that person should be stated. If a deceased person is being enquired, then the full name of the deceased and the exact written characters of the name should be stated.

Enquirer: Hi, Master Lu. I was born in 1986, year of the Tiger. I would like to ask about my career. How can I improve myself? How’s my family?

Master Lu: You were born in 1981, year of the Tiger.

Enquirer: 1986.

Master Lu: 1986? Hm. Ah-ya, your life is a very bumpy journey, especially in terms of relationships. Do you understand?

Enquirer: Yes. Ah, I don’t really mind about relationships. It’s okay. Relationship-wise, it’s okay. How about career?

Master Lu: Your career affects you. Young lady, you don’t understand. Your heart can be broken due to relationship problems. Once your heart is broken, you won’t be happy, then your career won’t be smooth. In fact, both family and career need to be smooth. So you should also have good relationships. So in Chinese, there’s a saying, “If the family lives in harmony, all affairs will prosper.” Right? Only a person who doesn’t get involve in arguments would have a smooth career. If your relationships aren’t good, you will be depressed. Think about it, how would you be successful at work? So when everything is smooth in your life, I also have something to teach you. Ah, you think about it. Do you want everything to be smooth in your life? Then you should think about whether you are sick or not. If you’re sick, let me tell you, your fortune won’t be good. So when you’re sick, you should be careful because it indicates that your fortune is going downhill. Do you understand?

Enquirer: Then are there any foreign spirits occupying my body? Or my house?

Master Lu: There are foreign spirits occupying the body of one of your family members. For you to be born into this family, in fact you’re meant to repay karmic debts.

Enquirer: Yes.

Master Lu: You earn a lot of money and you work very hard, but you’re constantly giving it to your family. Also, you’re treating your family extremely well. You’re a person who is meant to repay karmic debts.

Enquirer: Then what should I do?

Master Lu: Everyone, have you heard that… Let me tell you, most girls are born to repay karmic debts and most boys are born to collect karmic debts. Daughters mostly repay karmic debts, and sons mostly collect karmic debts. So they come into your life to collect karmic debts. Do you understand?

Enquirer: I understand. So Master Lu, what should I do in terms of performing recitations?

Master Lu: You should recite the Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou) every day to increase your spiritual power. You should also recite the Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching). These two are the fundamentals. Do you understand?

Enquirer: I understand.

Master Lu: You should also recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen).

Master Lu: Why do you need to recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen)? Very simple. Because in your present life, you’re destined to experience your karmic retribution because you committed many wrongdoings in your previous life. Only through the recitation of the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Ta Chan Hui Wen) then you will be able to correct the wrongs. Right? Alright?

Enquirer: Alright.

Master Lu: I believe that you can improve, but not right now. Wait until you have performed your recitations for a bit longer. As time goes by, you will obtain realisation. At the moment, you have not attained realisation.

Enquirer: So need to recite more Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching).

Master Lu: Alright, alright. Young lady, do you understand?

Enquirer: I understand.

Master Lu: Experiencing suffering is actually receiving blessings. If you experience suffering when you’re young, then in your old age, you won’t suffer as much. If you don’t experience suffering when you’re young, then in your old age, you would really be suffering.

Enquirer: Okay. Thank you, Master Lu. Thank you.
